Rules that get a photo returned

    • 50 × 70 mm, taller than the ICAO format.
    • Head 31–36 mm from chin to crown.
    • Plain white or light background, uniform lighting.
    • Paper applications need a photographer’s stamp and date on the back.
    • No filters, no retouching, no AI beautification. A photo that does not look like you is rejected however well it is cropped.

    Printing it

If the application is on paper, use the 6×4 print sheet button in the tool. It places as many copies of the crop as fit on a 6 × 4 inch page at 300 DPI, with cut marks. Print at 100%: "fit to page" changes the size and invalidates the photo.

    Questions

What size is a Canada Passport photo?

50 mm wide by 70 mm high: 591 × 827 px at 300 DPI. The head, measured chin to crown, should be 31–36 mm.

    What background do I need?

Plain white or light colour. Plain means no pattern, no door frame, and nothing dark behind the head. Stand about a metre from the wall and face a window.

Can I take it with my phone?

Yes. Use the rear camera if you can, at arm’s length or with help, and fill the frame with your head and shoulders. The tool applies the orientation tag and crops to the frame.

    Where is the official rule?

Published by canada.ca. Sizes change, so open the source before you submit and check anything specific to your case.

This page summarises published guidance for a Canada Passport photo. It is not legal advice and it is not a guarantee of acceptance. If your application has unusual requirements (glasses, a head covering, a child, a medical exemption), read the official source first.
