How the crop works.

Four steps, and the arithmetic behind them.

Millimetres first, pixels second

Every frame here is stored in millimetres; the pixel size is derived: width in mm ÷ 25.4 × 300. A 35 × 45 mm photo becomes 413 × 531 px. The numbers look odd because they come from the print size, not the other way round.

The head guide is a range, not a line

Each document specifies a chin-to-crown range, usually 32–36 mm. The gauge in the tool shows the upper bound against the frame height, so you can see how much of the photo the head should fill. Face straight on, eyes level, and let the range do the rest.

Why a 6×4 sheet

Many applications still want prints, and labs charge per sheet rather than per photo. The sheet lays out as many copies as fit on a 150 × 100 mm page at 300 DPI, with cut marks. Print at 100%: scaling to fit changes the size and invalidates the photo.
